Donations for Iraqi Refugees

Friends - remember to donate money to Interfaith Ministries for their efforts to assist Iraqi Refugees. Checks should be made out to "Interfaith Ministries – Refugee Program" and mailed to:

Interfaith Ministries, 3131 W. Alabama Street , Houston , TX , 77098 .

At the request of Interfaith Ministries, LOFM does not give money directly to the family we sponsor for purposes of equability.

New Directories available on the website: Current Directory, Address Archive, and List of Clerks and Positions

            The Provisional Directory includes information for members, attenders, and children who live locally and are currently active in the meeting.

            The Address Archive has the addresses of all those Friends/friends whose addresses may be important to us, but who are not locally active. It also shows a second address for those Friends who sometimes leave us for part of the year.

            The List of Clerks and Positions includes phone numbers and emails.

            We ask Friends to use good stewardship of these directories, and not broadcast them widely to a general public. This list is considered private information for use within our fellowship. Many Friends have shared their personal information with that understanding, and the directory is published in the restricted "members only" area of the web page. The rule of thumb would be that only those who are on the list are welcome to a copy.

Recycling at LOFM

At LOFM there are three places you can deposit items for curbside recycling:

The green bin belonging to the city is in the kitchen alcove of the Little House. All recycling items go into one bin.

Large recycling containers are in the janitor's closet of the post-function of the meeting house. These are labeled for the desired separation.

Also available in the meeting house, new in response to your requests, is a small bin in the prefunction, placed next to the trash can. It's very subtle, so don't mistake it. One side of the bin will hold office papers, old flyers, etc. – paper products only.  The other side of the bin has a small bucket for bottles and cans, or other items, so that those of us who like to finish our drink before we enter meeting have a place to put our empties.

Paper Products in our dumpster: newspaper, magazines, telephone books, advertising mail, corrugated cardboard. We ask everyone in meeting to be aware of paper collected in the three areas available, and to take responsibility at the end of Sunday activities for putting the recycling in the dumpster. It's practically on the way to your car.

Curbside recycling at LOFM. The City of Houston curbside recycling program will pick up aluminum and tin cans, plastic soft drink, milk and water containers [numbers 1-5, and 7], together in the same green bin. Curbside recycling happens every other week. Please take glass containers home if you have a place to recycle them; the City of Houston doesn't take them.

Rufus Jones reading group

A new book group started Sep 24 reading Rufus Jones: Essential Writings. We will be meeting Thursday evenings in the Little House at least until the end of October. Next week (October 1) we will be discussing Chapter 1 in the book. Rufus Jones was one of the most influential Quakers of the 20th century. 

Adult First Day school for the fall: exploring Quakerism

Adult First Day School for the fall will continue its exploration of Quakerism with a six-session series on important figures in Quaker history, beginning with George Fox, founder of the Religious Society of Friends, and moving through Quakers in early America and their impact on the formation of our democracy. Presenters will be Friends Mary McKerall and Kathryn van der Pol. Classes meet First Day (Sunday) mornings from 9:35 AM to 10:20 AM in the meeting house. 

Adults needed to help out in Children's First Day classes

Spend time with the Children helping in their First Day classes this year.  We need three volunteers each First Day to help in each of the younger three classes.   Join Peggy MacDonald with the Elementary class, Kathy Brooks with the Pre-K, or Maria Hernandez in the nursery.  We are committing to having 2 adults in each group of younger children to improve the supervision and safety of both the children and adults. Watch for Janet Williams with a sign-up sheet or contact her directly to volunteer at mactexan@earthlink.net.

Register for Bayou Quarterly: October 9-11

Time to register for Bayou Quarterly,  which will be held in Moss Bluff, Louisiana , from October 9-11.

Information, directions, and registration forms are available on the LOFM website. We're looking for suggestions for something special to do to remember Mary Griffiths, de facto social director of BQ.

LOFM Work Days: Saturday Oct 3 and Saturday Oct 17, 8 am - 1 pm

Community building work days scheduled for October.  Set Saturday October 3rd and Saturday October 17th aside for work days. There are a number of clean up and freshen up jobs to do around and in the buildings. This is a great opportunity to get to know people better in Meeting and save the Meeting some money.  The work we do not do as a community eventually is hired out. Come on by anytime between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM  even if you only have an hour, all help is very much appreciated.
